Na mesma pedra se encontram, Conforme o povo traduz, Quando se nasce - uma estrela, Quando se morre - uma cruz. Mas quantos que aqui repousam Hão de emendar-nos assim: "Ponham-me a cruz no princípio... E a luz da estrela no fim!"

Inscription for a Cemetery Gate
On the same headstone you’ll find
the people’s view of gain and loss:
above the date of birth, a star,
above the date of death, a cross.
But many of those who rest here now
would correct us with their final breath:
“There should be a cross above my birth…
“and the light of a star above my death!
